HEAT STROKE: DURING THE SUMMER, BE AWARE OF HEAT STROKE FOR BOTH KIDS AND ADULTS
Heat stroke is a common injury which can take place during the summer. It is caused the overheating of body temperature called hyperthermia. Hyperthermia is an elevation of body temperature that is above normal (96.8 to 99.5º F).
To prevent elevation of body heat when going out, remember to wear comfortable clothing that is light weight and lightly colored, drink lots of fluid (preferably water) to keep your body hydrated. If possible, wear a hat to keep direct sunlight off of your scalp. If you feel that your heart rate or breathing rate is elevated, begin developing a headache or heat cramps, start having a change in behaviors (especially if you start becoming disoriented or confused), your skin becomes flushed, you may be suffering from heat stroke.
What Is Heat Stroke?
Heat stroke is when your body temperature exceeds 104ºF. There are two types of heat stroke. One type is caused when you over-exert yourself (this occurs mostly in young people who are in excellent health). The other type is when you do not exert yourself (this is more common with older people who already have medical problems, including: Obesity, some physical disability, heart disease, psychiatric disorders, and drug users).
Persons of all ages can be affected
How To Treat Heat Stroke
Transfer the person to a shaded environment that is cooler. Lay them on their back with both legs elevated and have them drink lots of fluid. People who do not improve quickly should seek the help of a medical provider right away. Extended periods of heat stroke can cause organ damage to the brain, the heart, muscles, and kidneys. Please do not wait, the longer you wait, the more damage may occur.
